About Zomba Plateau Forest Reserve

The Zomba Plateau Forest Reserve is a prominent highland forest reserve located near the town of Zomba in southern Malawi. Rising to nearly 2,087 meters (6,850 feet), the plateau is part of the Shire Highlands and covers an area of rich montane forest, grasslands, and rocky cliffs. This forest reserve protects a diverse range of flora and fauna, including endemic plant species and various bird species such as the Yellow-throated Apalis and the African Olive Pigeon. Historically, the plateau was used as a colonial administrative retreat during British rule, and remnants of these facilities remain accessible to visitors. Today, it serves as both a natural haven and a recreational destination for locals and tourists. Visitors can explore numerous hiking trails offering panoramic views of surrounding plains, waterfalls, and unique geological formations like the striking Malosa Escarpment. The cool climate provides relief from Malawi’s lowland heat, and the area is also popular for mountain biking, camping, and birdwatching. Several small streams and rivers originate on the plateau, feeding the surrounding lowlands. The combination of natural beauty, ecological significance, and outdoor recreation opportunities make the Zomba Plateau Forest Reserve an important protected area in Malawi’s conservation network and a rewarding destination for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts.
